1. Why beat-synced editing matters
The single biggest difference between an amateur music video and a professional one is whether the cuts land on the beat. It's not stylistic preference — it's how human perception of rhythm works. When your edit lands on a downbeat, the viewer's brain rewards them with a tiny dopamine hit. When you miss the beat by 100 milliseconds, the cut feels wrong even if the viewer can't articulate why.
This effect compounds across an entire video. A 90-second piece with 30 cuts has 30 opportunities to feel "in the pocket" or "off." Get them right and the audience watches in trance. Get them wrong and they bounce.
The challenge is that landing every cut on the beat by hand is excruciating work. A 3-minute song at 120 BPM has 360 beats. Tapping them out by ear and lining your clips up takes anywhere from 20 minutes to 2 hours depending on your speed and the music's complexity. 2. Beat detection fundamentals
Before you choose a tool, it helps to understand what "the beat" actually means in audio analysis terms. There are three concepts that get conflated:
BPM (Beats per Minute)
The global tempo of the song. A typical pop song sits between 90 and 130 BPM. House music tends toward 120–128. Trap and hip-hop often sit at 70–90 (but felt as 140–180 if you count the hi-hat). BPM is the easiest metric to compute — even a 1990s shareware audio tool could measure it accurately on simple tracks.
Onset detection
An "onset" is the start of any percussive event — a kick drum, a snare, a cymbal hit. Onsets happen at the beat (kicks and snares usually), between beats (hi-hats, claps), and off-beat (ghost notes, fills). Onset detection finds every percussive moment, not just the beats.
Beat tracking
This is the hard part: identifying which onsets are the beat versus which are decoration. Good beat tracking algorithms model the song's rhythmic structure (4/4, 3/4, swing) and lock onto the dominant pulse, ignoring fills and syncopation. Bad beat tracking algorithms latch onto every cymbal and produce a marker every quarter-note.
When you read that a tool "detects beats automatically," that vague claim hides which of the three things it actually does. Cheap tools just detect onsets. Good tools do beat tracking. 5. Step-by-step: edit to music with Pulse Edit
This section assumes you've installed Pulse Edit (free trial works fine). The full workflow takes under 5 minutes for a typical 3-minute music video.
Step 1 — Import your music and video
Open DaVinci Resolve and create a new project. Import your music track (WAV preferred, MP3 works fine) by dragging it into the media pool. Then drop it on the timeline as audio. Add your video clips to the media pool but don't put them on the timeline yet.
Step 2 — Launch Pulse Edit

Step 3 — Select your audio and detect beats

Cut on downbeats, not every beat
Cutting on every beat creates a frenetic montage that works for action sequences and high-energy edits but feels exhausting on longer pieces. Most professional music videos cut on downbeats (beat 1 of each bar) with occasional emphasis cuts on beat 3. In Pulse Edit, choose "Every 4 beats" for clean downbeat editing.
Match motion direction to musical phrase
If a phrase rises (pitch ascending), use clips that pan upward or have upward motion. If it falls, use downward motion. This is "synchresis" — viewers don't notice it consciously but they feel the alignment.
Hold shots through the breakdown
Every song has quieter sections — bridges, breakdowns, verse 1. Cutting frantically through these sections kills momentum. Better technique: hold longer shots through breakdowns and unleash rapid-cut sequences when the track hits the chorus or drop. Use J-cuts and L-cuts on transitions

Speed ramps on builds
If the song has a build (rising tension before a drop), apply speed ramps to your clips that match the build's curve. Beat markers tell you exactly where the drop hits, so your ramp can resolve perfectly on the impact frame.
7. Ten mistakes that ruin beat-synced edits
- Cutting on every single beat. Tiring to watch. Save full-tempo cuts for choruses.
- Ignoring genre conventions. Hip-hop expects cuts on 1 and 3. House expects cuts on every 4 bars. Don't fight the genre.
- Using round() instead of floor() for frame conversion. Frame timing must use floor() / int() — round() introduces a 1-frame drift that compounds. Details here.
- Detecting beats on the wrong audio version. If your final mix differs from your reference track (different mastering, EQ, etc), detect on the final mix to avoid drift.
- Forgetting to lock audio when shifting markers. Markers anchor to timeline position, not audio. If you nudge audio, markers don't follow. Lock audio first.
- Hard-cutting through quiet sections. Breakdowns deserve held shots. Save the rapid cuts for the drop.
- Cutting before the kick, not on it. The kick is the dopamine trigger. A cut that lands 2 frames before the kick feels rushed; on the kick feels powerful.
- Re-detecting after every edit. Detect once on the final master audio, then forget about it. Re-detecting wastes time and risks drift.
- Mismatched FPS conforming. If your timeline is 23.976 fps and your audio is 48kHz, frame math must conform correctly or markers drift by milliseconds over time.
- Not testing on a different speaker. Headphones flatten dynamics. Always check final cuts on phone speakers or a TV — that's how 80% of viewers will watch.
8. Workflow templates by video type
Travel montage / vlog

9. Frequently Asked Questions
Can I detect beats in DaVinci Resolve natively?
No. Resolve doesn't have built-in beat detection. You need either a script (free but technical) or a plugin like Pulse Edit (paid, click-to-run). Resolve's Fairlight audio pages have transient detection but no beat-tracking algorithm.
Does Pulse Edit work with the free version of DaVinci Resolve?
